ELHOUSINE ELAZZAOUI OFFICIAL WINNER 2022

Elhousine Elazzaoui is the official winner of the 29th Jungfrau-Marathon.

The 31-year-old Moroccan athlete crossed the finish line at Eigergletscher in 3:00:49. Placed only seventh at km 26 in Lauterbrunnen, Elazzaoui mounted an impressive pursuit and steadily inched his way to the fore. Robert Pkemboi of Kenya is now second, 1:26 behind. Rounding off the podium with a time of 3:03:54 is last year's winner José David Cardona of Columbia.

The winner of the 2022 Jungfrau-Marathon, Mark Kangogo, was caught in an anti-doping control after his success at Sierre-Zinal in August. On 12 October 2022, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) banned the Kenyan runner from competing for three years commencing on 9 September 2022. All of Mark Kangogo's results since and including 13 August 2022 have been disqualified. The Jungfrau-Marathon prize money will be paid out to the overall top 10 in the definitive ranking list.

The race on 10 September was spectacular. It is most regrettable and gives pause for thought that the men's ranking has to be revised as a result of a doping ban. The organisers of the Jungfrau-Marathon disassociate themselves in the strongest possible terms from athletes who seek to gain an advantage by taking banned substances. The emotions the winner has had to forego cannot be put into words: "I feel truly bad for Elhousine Elazzaoui," says race director Patrick Wieser, "but I hope we'll see him again on 8/9 September 2023 at the 30th anniversary edition of the Jungfrau-Marathon."
